Donate to help low-income women live, work and thrive...

Crittenton Women's Union (CWU) is a nonprofit organization that transforms the course of low-income women's lives so that they can attain economic independence and create better futures for themselves and their families. We accomplish this by:

  • Providing safe housing, caring supports, education, and training programs;
  • Innovating new programmatic designs based on research and client experience;
  • Using this knowledge and experience to shape public policy.

Each year CWU helps more than 2,000 people through its safe housing, education and training programs, and family support services.

"I hadn't completed high school but my dream was to become a nurse, so I joined the GED program at CWU. After getting my GED, I enrolled in a training program and then found a job as a medical technician. I was encouraged to enter a nursing preparatory program in a community college, and will soon be starting nursing school!"—Joanna, Education Program Graduate

"When I graduated from high school I was eight months pregnant and didn't have a clear direction for my future. With all the support I've gotten from Crittenton Women's Union, I'm learning to set goals for myself and my baby. Now I have a full scholarship to college and am determined to provide a good life for my son."—Vera, Parenting Program Participant

"Before I came to CWU, I had been in and out of variety of low-wage jobs. Using the Hot Jobs webtool, I learned which kinds of jobs would make it possible to support myself and my family. There were some jobs that I never would have thought of before. Now I have a better understanding of where I want my life to go."—Cindy, Workforce Training Program Participant

"I now know that I am not the same woman who first came to CWU. I've gained the confidence needed to be successful in all areas of my life. I am now empowered and can advocate not just for myself but for others as well."—Carla, Former Transitional Housing Resident

Helping women travel from points of crisis to securing the skills and resources they need to support themselves and their families is our mission. Often the women who come to Crittenton Women's Union feel that they can't...find a job where they can support their families...or a safe, affordable place to live. With little hope or confidence, they see their future as pretty bleak.

At CWU our goal is to help women see how they can...obtain the education and training to acquire a family-sustaining job, find appropriate housing and become economically secure.

CWU's programs guide women to think differently about their career and personal goals. Together, we explore ways to span the gap that women face when they move out of poverty and toward self-sufficiency. As part of this process, we are linking our own programs with other organizations to form tighter, more effective networks of resources.

Our research department determines the barriers to self-sufficiency and the best ways for women to break through them to gain the skills, jobs and housing they need.

Our advocacy staff helps eliminate the obstacles women face, building partnerships across sectors, and creating better policies around child care, housing, and workforce training.

Your continued interest and support are crucial components in moving women toward secure, fulfilling lives and better futures. We extend our sincere thanks and look forward to your continued involvement as we strive to ensure that all women can...live, work and thrive!
