Crittenton Women’s Union transforms the course of low-income women’s lives so that they can attain economic independence and create better futures for themselves and their families. CWU provides safe housing, caring supports, education, and training programs along with innovative new programmatic designs based on research and client experience. We use this knowledge and experience to shape public policy.

Institutional Advancement Intern (Fall 2008 Semester)

The Crittenton Women's Union Institutional Advancement (IA) Department is seeking an intern for the fall 2008 term. The IA Intern will be an important part of the CWU IA Team, providing support for the many fundraising responsibilities of the department.
Requirements:
  • A strong interest in Crittenton Women's Union's efforts to help poor women become financially self-sufficient 
  • Ability to work well independently, and also as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Initiative and ability to follow-through on all assigned tasks and attention to detail.
  • Timeliness and professionalism.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet.
  • Research and project management experience a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with the coordination and implementation of the CWU's Holiday Toy Drive
  • Assisting with grant prospect research
  • Assisting with the coordination and implementation of the CWU Annual Meeting – 12/4/08
  • Assisting with fundraising database (Raiser's Edge) entry as needed – training will be available
  • Draft acknowledgements of corporate and foundation grants
  • Assisting in projects that arise throughout the semester
  • Overall support of the general operation of the IA Team
Shifts Available: Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM (flexible)
Internship Level: Undergraduate and Graduate students encouraged to apply.

Healthy Families Intern

Healthy Families is a program designed to provide parenting skills to first-time mothers under the age of 21. Home visitors provide in home training and support to clients through their pregnancy up until the child's third birthday.

Division: Child and Family Services
 
Intern Duties:
  • Administrative work including mailings, filing, tracking immunization records and more as appropriate
  • Administering and analyzing surveys and focus groups to receive client feedback
  • Plan and execute organized groups and fields trips to various educational places throughout the city

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Ability to multitask and perform in an office setting
  • Use of discretion and sensitive to the needs of diverse populations
  • Desire to work and learn in a unique way
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

Shifts Available: Shifts available 9:00 – 5:00 pm, hours negotiable.
Internship level: Undergraduate students encouraged to apply.

FLASH Intern

The FLASH (Family Literacy Acquisition Skills at Home) home visiting program offers in home support for parents of young children including low-income, homeless and first time parents. These programs focus on preparing young children for school success and healthy development and build upon client's strengths to enhance their parenting abilities.
 

Division: Child and Family Services

Intern Duties:

  • Assist with general office work;
  • Maintain and update program materials as needed;
  • Assist home visitors with follow up calls, research and other duties; and
  • Complete special projects.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Ability to multitask and perform in an office setting
  • Use of discretion and sensitive to the needs of diverse populations
  • Desire to work and learn in a unique way
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
Shifts Available: 15 hours weekly, times are flexible.

Assessment Center Case Management Intern

The Assessment Centers operate as temporary emergency shelter where clients are assessed and supported through their permanent housing search.

Division: Homeless Services
 
Position Description:
The Case Management Intern will assist the Casework Coordinator in carrying out client support services. Activities will include client outreach, case management, general life skills instruction and the delivery of services consistent with program objectives and standards. Daily duties will include: client intake and orientation, needs assessment, development and monitoring of personal goals, case conference participation, counseling, crisis intervention and prevention services as needed, developing and maintaining a positive working relationship with clients and service delivery.
 
Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Case management experience preferred
Shifts Available: 10 hours weekly, times are flexible

Horizons Housing Program Intern

Horizons, a domestic violence transitional housing program, is looking for an intern who is dedicated to assisting women and their families escape domestic violence and begin the road to self-sufficiency.
 
Division: Housing
 

Intern Duties:

  • Some office work including filing;
  • Case Management including working one on one with clients and their children to help connect them to appropriate services and address their specific needs;
  • Assisting in the play room with children as needed; and
  • Assisting with calling housing authorities for follow up with clients.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Intern should possess knowledge of domestic violence learned either through coursework or prior experience;
  • Case Management skills including ability to work with clients within appropriate boundaries and limit setting;
  • Child Care knowledge and experience; and
  • Ability to perform in a team setting.
Shifts Available: Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM (flexible)
Internship Level: Undergraduate and Graduate students encouraged to apply.

Hastings House Administrative Intern

The Hastings House transitional shelter in Brighton offers transitional housing and comprehensive services to promote self-sufficiency for 62 homeless families.
 
Division: Housing
 
Position Description:
  • Provide administrative assistance by performing the following tasks: copying, filing, and organizing of materials
  • Prepare documents in Microsoft Word
  • Maintain bulletin boards
Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong organizational skills
Shifts Available: Flexible, 10-20 hours per week.
Internship Level: Undergraduate and Graduate students encouraged to apply.
Pay level: Volunteer/non-paid

Marketing / Communications Intern

The Marketing & Communications Department is looking for an intern to work closely with the Director of Marketing & Communications, assisting with the organization's efforts to convey a clear and consistent image, to position Crittenton Women's Union as the “go-to” organization for women, and to build positive public recognition and support of Crittenton Women's Union. This is an exciting time to be involved with this forward-looking organization, and an intern would gain valuable experience in the marketing/communications area.
 
Intern duties would include:
  • Assist in Marketing/Communications with press and media follow-up, list updates, brochures and newsletter, website, general writing assignments and events
  • Interact with departments throughout the organization to gather information about various programs for materials and projects
  • Intern would work on “real” projects, building a professional portfolio
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Strong writing, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of web and electronic media
  • Creativity
  • Research skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Familiarity with local media helpful, but not absolutely necessary

Research Assistant Intern

Position Description:
The President of CWU seeks an intern to assist in a research project about changes in the nature of poverty and anti-poverty organizations in the United States. The premise of the research is that while poverty has grown and become more intractable, at the same time changes in the nature of non-profit organizations have rendered them less capable of improving the lives of the poor. The research proposes new organizational approaches to solve the current mismatch between the structure of anti-poverty organizations and the problems they attempt to address.
 
The ideal research assistant for this project will be a graduate student in a social service or management concentration who will be performing basic literature review, interviewing clients and staff, and summarizing findings. This material will be used in development of an article for publication.
 
Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Advanced coursework in research, social policy, and/or management
  • Interest in recent trends in poverty in the US and the effectiveness of non-profit organizational responses
  • Strong writing, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, specifically Word and Excel.

Shifts Available: 10 - 20 hours weekly, times are flexible

Internship Level: Graduate students preferred

Pay level: Volunteer / non-paid
